Reach for the Goal
This past weekend we headed down off of the mountain, down through Cumberland MD, past Hagerstown, Frederick, and on down to Alexandria, VA. We had a booth at an art and craft show down there.
What a difference three hours can make. From seeing trees with no leaves, quiet country roads, fewer houses, we slipped into a world of asphalt, cars, buildings, and super highways. And the cooler air turned into a pleasant 72 degrees.
It was good to have some car time with Jenelle, to talk about our summer, life in general, our kids and other things that couples talk about. We also shared our expectations for the event that we were going to. Jenelle had realistic goals, while I was a little more on the dreaming side of things. I was hoping to make thousands of dollars and to be able to spend the rest of the spring and summer hunting turkeys and fishing and not having to work much. Jenelle was excited about meeting people and just getting our name out there a little more.
We got our tent set up and everything ready for show time and then met our neighbors. The show didn't start until 11:00 AM and it was a really gorgeous day. Jenelle was happy just to be hanging out in a city park with the warmer temps and the festive feeling of summer time. I was happy to be there also, but a part of me was wishing that I was back home, chasing turkeys in the mountains.
The crowd turned out be pretty slim. We had never been there before and didn't know what to expect. Everything seemed nice with the music and everything, but the people just weren't there. We heard it from the other vendors around us. At the end of the day Jenelle had met her goal. She made some new friends and some new contacts and had a fun day. And to put it mildly, I didn't reach my goal of making enough money to take it easy for the rest of the summer.
Monday morning I'll be chasing turkeys, looking for morels and shed antlers, and telling myself that I better get back to work.
I'm excited about our next local show at New Germany State Park which is in two weeks. I need to make some glass for that. And it will be fun to hang out in our own little neck of the woods and talk to people. We probably won't get rich but I'll have a different goal. I'm expecting a fun day.
I've also made a tough but more realistic, personal goal for myself this spring. The goal is to find 5 shed antlers in the mountains around my home before everything greens up and turns leafy. I found number four on Friday evening. I'm looking hard for number five.
I'll follow Jenelle's lead. Our goals can't always be about money. There's more to life than that!
